The Gates Cambridge Scholarship Program, established by a US$210 million donation from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, offers approximately 80 full-cost scholarships annually to outstanding international students, including those from Afghanistan. These scholarships are for pursuing postgraduate degrees (Masters and PhD) at the University of Cambridge.
Funding
The scholarship typically covers annual costs between £35,000 and £45,000, which may extend up to £65,000 per year. It covers international fees, maintenance, student visa costs, and a student immigration health surcharge. Additional discretionary funding is also available for academic development and dependent child allowances.
Eligibility Criteria
- Level of Study: Masters and PhD.
- Mode of Study: Full-time and Part-time.
- Nationality: Open to 255 nationalities, including Afghans.
- Academic Merit: Candidates are assessed based on intellectual ability, choice of course, commitment to societal improvement, and leadership potential.
Application Process
Candidates must opt-in for funding through the Cambridge Applicant Portal and answer additional questions therein. Application deadlines differ for US nationals residing in the USA (October 11, 2023) and other international applicants, including those from Afghanistan (either December 5, 2023 or January 4, 2024). Successful candidates for international rounds will be notified by April 1, 2024.
Other Information
- Duration of award may extend up to 4 years for PhD scholars, with extensions considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Scholars must sign in with the Trust quarterly to receive their maintenance payments and provide an annual progress report.
